5 Questions to Ask before booking a reiki session

I come from the world of licensed counseling, where training is extensive, supervised, and deeply rooted in ethics and client care. I spent years completing graduate education, internship hours, supervision, examinations, and ongoing consultation before becoming independently licensed. Even after licensure, like many therapists, I continued seeking mentorship and supervision when navigating more complex situations with clients.
When I entered the world of Reiki and spiritual healing, I was fortunate to find a teacher and lineage that valued ethics, structure, continued practice, and thoughtful guidance. My training emphasized client-centered and trauma-informed care, and I remain connected to that community and practice today.
Over time, I began to notice that the world of Reiki can vary widely. Training programs differ significantly in depth and philosophy. Some practitioners maintain a consistent personal practice and ongoing mentorship, while others may approach Reiki in more intuitive or self-directed ways. Some blend Reiki with additional spiritual modalities, energy practices, or intuitive work.
None of this automatically makes a practitioner “good” or “bad.” However, I do believe clients deserve transparency, informed consent, and the opportunity to ask questions before entering any healing space.
My goal in writing this is not to criticize other practitioners, but to empower people seeking Reiki to make informed decisions about the kind of care and environment that feels aligned, ethical, and supportive for them.
Here are a few questions you might consider asking before booking a Reiki session:
Questions to Ask Before Booking a Reiki Session
What kind of Reiki training have you completed, and how long have you been practicing?
Do you blend Reiki with other modalities, spiritual practices, or intuitive guidance during sessions?
How do you approach client comfort, boundaries, and consent during a session?
Do you continue your Reiki practice through mentorship, personal practice, or continuing education?
What should I expect during and after a Reiki session?
Different practitioners exist. Ask questions and choose what feels aligned and safe for you.
I believe Reiki can be most supportive when it is practiced with intention, transparency, continued learning, and respect for each client’s individual experience.
