What to Expect From a Reiki Session

Reiki is a Japanese healing technique that is passed down from Master to student through a series of attunements or energy frequency exchanges. Students study Reiki for years and continue to practice healing on themselves and others and/or determine that they also want to teach Reiki. More time, energy and attunements to the vibration of the Master symbol and energy are required for the Master level. Reiki is an intelligent universal healing energy that matches the frequency of the needs of the client. It is never harmful and if some one does not wish to receive Reiki, it simply will not go to them. Reiki practitioners do not direct the healing energy as much as they channel the energy through their own energy centers, giving it to the client. Often Reiki practitioners receive impressions of areas in which the client has energy blocks. These blocks can originate from things like stress, pain, repressed emotion, negative thinking, etc. Reiki can help alleviate the blocks and the stuck energy, leaving clients feeling more calm, relaxed and open.

What to expect: Clients are fully clothed in a private room and will typically lay on a table or sit in a chair. The practitioner will place their hands lightly on (only if they have consent) or hover over the client's body. Reiki hand positions include specific points on the head, torso and limbs. The Reiki giver may keep their hands in one place anywhere from 2-15 minutes. Some practitioners like to talk to the clients and some prefer quiet while practicing. Most often, calming music is played in the background. Clients may feel heat, tingling or a gentle pulsing in the body. Often clients will access their imagination and may see colors or an image in their mind's eye. People may feel so relaxed that they fall asleep or they feel very peaceful, as if they are wrapped in a blanket. I hear that Reiki feels like a warm internal hug. To me, it feels like I'm floating on a cloud. Alternatively, some clients feel invigorated and energized. I have had clients proclaim that they are ready to tackle a project, feel really hungry, or feel more enthusiastic about going through the rest of their day. Clients need to drink plenty of water for the next 24 hours to ensure that they body can support the energy they have received. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, but short Reiki sessions are helpful and can give clients an idea as to whether they may like to try a longer one. The number of sessions clients need depend on what they want to accomplish and want to experience. Some people just want a couple while others come for a series of sessions. Reiki is a complementary healing therapy and not meant to replace other medical and therapeutic techniques.

Every Reiki practitioner will use some of the same techniques and then as they practice, will incorporate their own unique process. I have been to wonderful herbalists who practice Reiki and give out tinctures. Some practitioners like to incorporate guided meditations, sound, breathwork or forms of movement into a healing sessions. Sometimes an Oracle or a Tarot card will get pulled for the session to spark the client's imagination about issues that may need healing in their lives. Crystals and essential oils are also popular incorporated techniques to promote relaxation, healing and the alleviation of stress for clients.

My favorite thing about Reiki is that it helps people to feel as if they have more space - more space in busy mind or in a weary heart. I see people come in who feel pulled apart in many directions, anxious, stressed and frustrated. They leave me feeling open, calm, and even smiling. Other benefits include: relaxing tight muscles, strengthening the immune system, promoting pain relief, energizing the body, and adapting to the needs of the individual.

What do you think? Would you try Reiki?
